The world of DC Comics is always evolving, and sometimes, even the coolest ideas need a second chance. In this case, we're talking about Superman's sidekick, Boy Thunder, and the fascinating way DC has chosen to bring him back into the fold.
The Original Boy Thunder
Boy Thunder, or David Sikela, was introduced in the pages of Batman/Superman: World's Finest. His origin story is a familiar one: a survivor from a dead world, rocketed to Earth by his parents, much like Superman himself. David's unique physiology granted him powers under Earth's sun, and he took on the mantle of Boy Thunder, becoming Superman's trusted sidekick. However, their partnership was short-lived, as David was inadvertently transported to another world, Earth-22, where he became entangled with the Old God Gog and transformed into the anti-hero Magog.
A New Wave of Heroes
Fast forward to the present, and DC is revisiting the Boy Thunder concept with a twist. In Supergirl #12, we're introduced to Team Thunder, a group of clones grown from Boy Thunder's DNA. This new team consists of Thundergirl, Thunderlad, and Thunderkid, each equipped with tech to supply them with solar radiation, activating their powers. What makes this particularly fascinating is the ethical dilemma it presents. As clones, these heroes lack freedom and autonomy, raising questions about their role and purpose in the DC universe.
The Reign of the Superboys
DC's current event, "The Reign of the Superboys," showcases a range of Superboy characters, including Conner Kent and Superboy-Prime. The inclusion of Boy Thunder in this event has sparked speculation about his potential return. Personally, I think it's a brilliant move to revisit this character and explore the concept of cloning and its implications. It adds a layer of complexity to the Superman mythos and opens up new narrative possibilities.
A Second Chance for Boy Thunder?
One thing that immediately stands out is the potential for one of these clones to become the new Boy Thunder. With DC taking some bold creative risks in this event, it's not far-fetched to imagine a half-clone taking on the mantle. After all, we've seen Superboy-Prime on a redemption arc and Jon Kent adopting a new identity. Why not give Boy Thunder a second chance? It would be a unique way to honor the original character while also creating a fresh, new hero.
The Future of Team Thunder
While this is primarily a Supergirl comic, I believe there's room for a new Boy Thunder to emerge. The concept of short-lived ideas being revived and reimagined has given us some fantastic characters, and I'd love to see Team Thunder lead to something bigger for the Superman line. It's an exciting prospect, and I'm eager to see how DC develops these characters further.
